There is the equivalent of Team Deathmatch, but it’s one of the few sops to new players and the real experience is found attacking and defending control points and territory in the other two modes.There are some surface similarities with Battlefield in particular, but they’re obscured by the ruthlessly realistic damage modelling system which will regularly see you killed by a single bullet.

The disinterested computer-controlled enemies and dangerously incompetent allies may actually be even worse though.That’s just one of the caveats you have to accept going in though, and if you do manage to get a full 64-player battle going with people that know (and care) what they’re doing you finally begin to understand the appeal.

Created by a semi-professional team of enthusiasts it aims to simulate the Second World War’s most bloody urban battleground in excruciating detail. Not in terms of political correctness of course, it is one of the grimmest and unpleasant video games we’ve ever played, but in that it’s the sort of experience that could only exist on the PC.
